Notting Hill
Notting
Hill has a reputation as an affluent and fashionable area.
Victorian Houses and High Class Shopping, Restaurants are
making this location extremely attractive to many people including
pop stars, movie stars alike.
It
has an equally thriving alternative culture exemplified by
the famous Portobello Market, second hand music stores and
the ever popular Notting Hill Carnival. The
name Notting Hill is derived from the Saxon name contta, as
in Conttas Hill. In early times the area was entirely rural,
records show it as an early manor by the name of Notting Barns.
By the 1980’s single-occupation houses began to return
to favour with families who could afford to occupy them, and
Notting Hill is now one of the Londons smartest and most desirable
areas.
Notting
Hill is characterised by well maintained stucco fronted pillar-
porched houses, private gardens, communal garden access to
public parks at Holland Park Kensington Gardens and smart
shops. The areas newer wealthy residents are Satirised in
Rachel Johnson’s 2006 novel “Notting Hill”
which is set in Grand Houses surrounding a fictional communal
gardens. Post codes – W11, W2, W10.
